If you have lived in Vernon County for more than a few summers, you already know the shape of the season. Shakespeare in June, the fair around the start of the school year, Wild West Days in mid-August, farmers market on Saturday morning. The rhythm is the point. It's why people stay.
That rhythm changed in three specific ways for 2026, and if you plan your summer off muscle memory, you will miss at least one of them. The fair rebuilt how you pay at the gate. The Shakespeare Festival moved. And the small music valley outside Yuba has quietly become the biggest weekend draw in the county for anyone who cares about live sound.
Three quiet changes worth updating your calendar for
Before the weekly stuff, the shifts:
- The Vernon County Fair is running September 16 through 20, 2026 at the Vernon County Fairgrounds in Viroqua, and it swapped its old daily-ticket model for a single gate pass.
- The Viroqua Shakespeare Festival left the Thoreau College campus. The 5th Annual Viroqua Shakespeare Festival will take place at PrairieWind Park in Viroqua from June 25th through 28th, 2026.
- Driftless Music Gardens in Yuba booked a national touring headliner outside its festival weekends for the first time in memory.
Each one is worth its own section.
Tomorrow's move: the Driftless Garden Tour
If you are reading this the day it goes up, the closest thing on the calendar is the Friends of Kickapoo Valley Reserve garden tour. The 7th annual Friends of Kickapoo Valley Reserve Driftless Garden Tour 2026 takes root on Sunday, July 12th, 2026, running from 10 am to 4 pm around the landscape surrounding the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. The tour features six distinct stops, from lush displays of native and perennial plants to integrated art installations and water features.
Access is $15, and tickets can be purchased online at kickapoofriends.org or in person at the KVR Visitor Center, even on the day of the event. It is one of the few days a year you get to walk private ground around La Farge and Ontario without knowing the owner personally.
Wild West Days, and why it is a week earlier than you remember
Wild West Days has historically anchored the third weekend of August. For 2026, the dates are August 14 through August 16, 2026 at 925 Nelson Parkway in Viroqua. If you host family every year the way you always have, that shift can catch you off guard.
The programming is the programming. The 2026 Hell on Hooves two-day rodeo returns with mutton bustin', bull riding, bronc riding, barrel racing, and ranch rodeo events. The Wild West Days Horse Parade lines up at the Vernon County Fairgrounds at noon on Sunday, August 16, and the fairgrounds still transform into their 1880s boomtown build-out for the weekend.
One local logistics note worth internalizing: the wildwestdays.net site flagged that the neighboring fire station construction is affecting the grounds this year. Plan the walk in from a farther lot than you would normally park.
The Vernon County Fair rebuilt its gate
This is the change that will trip up the most residents. For 2026, the fair moved to a single-pass model.
The fairgrounds are calling it "Pay Once Get Into Everything," with gate admission and grandstand events bundled, plus special free admission days: Wednesday "Entry/Community Day" free, Friday "Youth Day" for kids 12 and under free, and Saturday "Military Day" free for active or retired military with valid ID.
Set against the prior structure, that is a real shift. Compare:

The Grandstand slate itself is unchanged in feel. Thursday is the Antique Farm Tractor Pull followed by Modified Truck and Tractor Pull, Friday is the Badger State Tractor and Truck Pull, Saturday is horse pulling at 10 am and demo derby at 7 pm, and Sunday closes with harness racing at 1 pm. Non-Grandstand programming includes a Draft Horse Show, Livestock Sale, and freestage acts including an Astonishing Hypnotist, Nicky D Trio, Ta-Da Robot Show, and Wisconsin Family Theater, alongside the carnival with Mr. Ed's Magical Midway rides and the Vernon County Fair Rocks Sunflower Project.
The fair itself is not new. The way you buy into it is.
Yuba is doing more heavy lifting than Main Street this year
Driftless Music Gardens sits on 20265 Pine Avenue Road, technically a Hillsboro postal address but just northwest of Yuba. If you have driven past it on a summer night and wondered what the traffic was about, this is the year to look closer. World-class artists have tour dates stopping in Yuba, Wisconsin, population 91, right next to stops at Red Rocks.
The 2026 slate:
- Bonfire Music & Arts Festival, June 11 through 13, celebrating ten years, with Charlie Parr, Joseph Huber, and the People Brothers Band on Friday.
- People Fest, August 6 through 8, celebrating eighteen years, with Kendall Street Company closing Thursday and Andy Frasco headlining Saturday.
- Umphrey's McGee, August 22, the band's first show ever in Yuba, WI and their first at Driftless Music Gardens.
- The Boogiedown, September 11 through 13, 2026, hosted by Armchair Boogie for the fifth year and celebrating ten years of the band.
The Umphrey's date is the story. Festival weekends are festival weekends, but a national touring act taking a one-off in a 91-person town is a signal about where the venue is headed. If you have neighbors who tent-camp, expect them to be gone that weekend.
The Shakespeare move, and what it means for a summer picnic
Viroqua Shakespeare has been building for four years on the Thoreau College grounds. For 2026, they picked up and moved. The festival presents Romeo and Juliet from June 25 through 28 at Prairie Wind Park in Viroqua, with shows at 7 pm Thursday through Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday, and live music and food vendors before the show. Admission stays free. Bring a chair.
The move happened alongside a real jump in the festival's funding base. Vernon County's Viroqua Shakespeare Festival received a $7,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin in advance of its 2026 season. Romeo and Juliet is directed by Greta Zandstra, a Chicago-based theater artist returning for her third Shakespeare production in Viroqua.
If your habit was to walk over from the Thoreau campus, PrairieWind is a different setup entirely. Different sightlines, different picnic spread, different parking pattern. Scout it before opening night.
The weekly layer that runs whether you show up or not
Big events get the posters. The county's real texture runs weekly.
The Viroqua Farmers Market runs every Saturday from May through October, 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at 220 S. Main Street in the Western Technical College parking lot in downtown Viroqua. That is the connective tissue of the whole warm season.
A block up, the Hotel Fortney Lounge at 100 N. Main Street runs live trivia one game per night with five rounds, free to play with cash prizes for the top two teams, plus dinner and drinks. If you have not made it into the trivia rotation yet, this is a low-cost way to meet the version of Viroqua that is not visible from the sidewalk.
And the Viroqua Food Co+op keeps stacking small on-patio events all summer. Their Welcome Summer Sampler runs Thursday, June 18, 2026 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, meeting local producers, sampling foods, with a free ice pop and a chance to chat with board members. The co-op sampling calendar restarts every couple of weeks. Check it before you assume nothing is happening on a Thursday afternoon.
The mistake residents make is treating summer as a set of festivals with quiet weeks in between. The math is the other way around. Most of the weight is in the weekly stuff. The festivals are the loud punctuation.

If you write these on the fridge in order, you have a season:
