The Adams County Fair is not in August this year. That single change breaks the muscle memory most residents run on from June through Labor Day, because the fair was the pin that held the rest of the summer plan in place. Once you move the pin, the weekly rhythm becomes the load-bearing part of the calendar, not the marquee weekend.
Below is what actually shifted, what stayed steady, and where the weekly grid is picking up the weight.
The fair moved. Read the fine print.
The Adams County Agricultural Society moved the 2026 fair to September 10 through 13 at the fairgrounds in Friendship, off its traditional August slot. The stated reason was carnival availability, and the Society has framed the new dates as a one-year evaluation before deciding whether September or August is the right long-term home. The Adams-Friendship Area School District has signaled willingness to work around the shift, which lands inside the school year.
What this means for a resident planning a summer: the last full weekend of August, which used to belong to the fair, is now open. Labor Day weekend is still Labor Day weekend. But if you host out-of-town family the way many Adams County households do around fair week, that trip is now a September trip. The competing county fair calendar in central Wisconsin is dense in September, so book campgrounds and short-term rentals earlier than you would have last year.
The weekly grid doing the heavy lifting
With the fair pulled out of August, the recurring weekly bookings are what actually run the summer. These are worth locking into your phone calendar once, not chasing week by week.
- Saturdays and Sundays, 556 S. Main Street, Adams. The Adams Flea and Farmers Market is in its 45th year in 2026 and runs Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with more than 100 merchants across the grounds. The seasonal outdoor market opened for the year on May 2 and continues through October 24. Live music and food trucks rotate through summer weekends.
- Fridays, Rome Town Center. The Rome Farmers Market runs weekly through the growing season, opening at 9 a.m. A different produce pool than the Adams market, closer to the Lake Arrowhead side of the county.
- Friday nights, Adams-Friendship VFW Post 6279, 172 N. Linden Street. Weekly bingo at 6:30 p.m. Not a lifestyle event, a habit. Bring cash.
- Mornings at Rustic Ridge Restaurant Beach, 2230 Town Road, Friendship. Yoga on the Beach on holiday weekends and select mornings through summer. Castle Rock Lake shoreline, no cover.
- First Saturday of the month, Adams County Airport–Legion Field 63C, 2016A 11th Avenue, Friendship. EAA Chapter 931's Pancake Breakfast Fly-In / Drive-In. The June 6 breakfast started at 7 a.m. and the pattern holds through summer.
Four of those five run whether or not the fair, a festival, or a national touring act happens to be in the county on a given weekend. That is the point. The weekly layer is what you plan against.
Castle Rock Lake got its anchor back
The most consequential opening on the water in recent memory is Crazy Taco Waterfront Restaurant at 1947 Dakota Lane, which took over the building that had housed Splash Waterfront Bar & Grill until Splash closed in 2021 after a 31-year run. The property sat idle long enough that most residents had stopped counting on it. Humberto Bravo, who also runs Bohemios Mexican Grill and Cantina in Portage, opened Crazy Taco with Carlos and Yolanda Torres in February 2025 after a two-month cleanout.
What matters locally is not the cuisine, it is the geometry. The property came with a 20-slip marina, its own tiki bar and deck, sand volleyball courts, and direct access off a main snowmobile trail. That is a unusually complete lakefront package for this stretch of Castle Rock, and its return to service reopens a boat-in weekend option that had been missing for four summers. If you keep a boat on Castle Rock, the practical effect is a second reliable stop on the west side of the lake.
Costa Ricky's tiki bar at Rustic Ridge Resort still runs its own summer show. The Solution plays there Saturday, August 22, which is the sort of booking that used to compete directly with fair weekend and no longer does.
Dates to circle before Labor Day

Notice the shape of that list. The old fair week in August is quieter on paper this year. The Fourth is dense, the middle of July gets the car cruise, and the fair now bookends the season instead of anchoring its middle.
The Rustic Ridge orbit, and why it matters more this summer
Rustic Ridge does more this summer than any single venue in the county because it stacks a full-service restaurant, a beach hosting yoga mornings, and Costa Ricky's tiki bar with its own booking calendar on the same property. When a weekly rhythm venue also lands the summer's higher-profile live music dates, it becomes the default fallback when a plan collapses. The 4th of July stack alone puts yoga, a parade watch, and a live-music market inside a three-mile drive of one another, all before noon.
Adams County's summer used to be organized around one big August weekend. Take that weekend out, and the county's routine is what remains. That routine is more resilient than the fair was, and this is the summer to notice it.
What the fair move tells you about 2027 planning
The Agricultural Society was explicit that 2026 is an evaluation year. Whether the fair snaps back to August in 2027 or stays in September depends on carnival contracts, school-district coordination, and gate numbers this September. If you own a short-term rental in the county, watch September 10 through 13 bookings closely, because that data is what the Society will be looking at too. A soft September will pull the fair back to August next year. A strong September could shift the whole summer arc for good.
The practical read for the rest of us: do not assume the 2026 calendar is a preview of 2027. Plan this summer on the September fair date, then plan next January.
